How to Sell Merch on YouTube: Setup, Tools & Strategy That Brings Conversions

The best way to sell merch on YouTube is to connect your merch store to your channel through YouTube Shopping, which adds your products to your channel store, video descriptions, and a product shelf beside your videos. Combine this with product tags on the videos where your merch actually appears (unboxings, behind-the-scenes, tutorials) and links in your description and pinned comments to guide viewers from watching to buying with as few steps as possible.

A viewer can love your video, love your product, and still never buy it, simply because there’s friction between “I want this” and “I bought this.” They have to leave the video, find your store, remember what they wanted, and complete checkout somewhere else entirely. Every extra step loses a percentage of interested buyers.

This gap between attention and purchase is the single biggest reason creators underperform on merch sales despite strong view counts. Closing that gap is the real skill here, more than the merch itself.

But if you’ve got an audience on YouTube, you’ve already figured out the hardest part of selling merch: attention. The question now is how to turn that attention into real sales, and that’s what we’ll be solving out ahead.

Set Up Your Channel to Sell Merch

Most creators try to fix merch sales by improving their content first. But if your channel isn’t technically set up to sell, the right merch model, the right program, the right integrations, and even your best video won’t convert. Here’s what needs to be in place first:

1. Pick Your Merch Model

  • Print-on-demand (Teespring/Spring, Fourthwall, Streamlabs Merch): no inventory, lower margins, fastest to launch
  • Self-fulfilled inventory: higher margins, more control, more upfront work
  • Licensed/manufactured merch: best for established brands with volume

2. Get into the YouTube Partner Program

Shopping features unlock through YPP. Early access starts at 500 subscribers, 3 valid public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days. Expanded YPP is only available in certain countries; outside those, the 1,000-subscriber threshold is the only route in. Your channel also can’t be set as Made for Kids and can’t have a Hate Speech strike. Check your standing in YouTube Studio under Earn.

3. Connect a Supported Source

YouTube supports a defined list of ecommerce platforms (Fourthwall, Shopify, Spring, Spreadshop, TeePublic, Wix, Shopline, plus region-specific options like Cafe24 and BASE) and a long list of merch retailers including Streamlabs, Bonfire, and Crowdmade. Print-on-demand and YouTube-supported are not the same thing, so check the current supported list before committing to a platform. Once connected and your items are approved, your products appear automatically in your video descriptions and in a Store tab on your channel homepage.

How To Track Merch Sales Performance on YouTube

Track click-through rate from your product shelf and end screens, conversion rate once viewers reach your store, and average order value from video-driven traffic. One caveat most guides skip: YouTube Analytics only reports sales and order data for certain connected platforms, currently Shopify, Spring, Spreadshop, and Cafe24. On Fourthwall, TeePublic, Wix, or a retailer integration, you’ll need to track conversions on your store side instead. If clicks are high but conversion is low, the friction is in your checkout flow, not your content.

YouTube’s Built-In Tools for Selling Merch

Before looking anywhere else, it’s important to know that YouTube already gives creators most of what they need to sell. But many people just aren’t using all of it, or are using it in the wrong order.

  • Product shelf: Displays products beside or below your videos. Worth knowing: Not every eligible channel gets shelf placement, so treat it as a bonus.
  • Store tab and description products: These populate automatically once your store is connected and your items are approved, which makes them the most reliable surface.
  • Product tagging: Tag specific items in videos, Shorts, and live streams so the right product surfaces when it’s shown up to 60 items per video or source 30 per live stream).
  • Shopping button: Appears on tagged content and surfaces your products without sending viewers off the page immediately.
  • Schermate finali: Point viewers to your store or a merch-specific video right as a video ends.
  • Commento appuntatos: Keep a direct link visible under every video, especially useful for older content still getting views.
  • Description links: The most overlooked spot. Always lead with your merch link, not buried under timestamps.

Increase Purchase Rates with Shoppable Video

Even with all of this in place, there’s still a major problem: viewers have to leave the video to make a purchase. This is why more brands and creators are moving toward video acquistabile formats: content where products can be tagged and purchased in minimal steps, sometimes without leaving the page where the video is embedded.

Platforms in this space, like Taggbox shoppable video or shoppable YouTube tools, let you embed video with tappable product tags directly on your website or landing page, so the “watch to buy” journey happens in one place instead of three. It’s less about replacing YouTube’s own tools and more about extending that shoppability to wherever else your video lives: your homepage, product pages, or email campaigns.

Formati di contenuto che convertono:

Tools only work if the content gives people a reason to buy. Let’s have a look at the formats that consistently convert:

  • Unboxings and hauls: Showing the product in hand builds desire faster than any description.
  • Behind-the-scenes/making-of videos: Creates story and authenticity around the product.
  • Tutorials or how-to content: Naturally features your merch and provides utility instead of relying on a hard pitch.
  • Community polls for new drops: Lets your audience feel ownership over what you release, which increases day-one sales.

How To Sell Merch on YouTube for Free

Not every merch strategy needs to have a huge budget. Some of the highest-converting merch strategies cost nothing but time and consistency.

  • Use print-on-demand so there’s no upfront inventory cost.
  • Rely on organic formats: Shorts, community posts, pinned comments instead of paid promotion.
  • Repurpose existing video content (old uploads) with updated merch links and end screens.
  • Cross-post clips to other free channels you already have (Instagram, TikTok) to drive traffic back to YouTube and your store.

Where Else to Push Your Merch Content

  • YouTube Shorts: Short, high-frequency content that keeps merch visible between long-form uploads.
  • Scheda della comunità: Polls, teaser images, and restock announcements.
  • Posting incrociato: Repurpose merch-featuring clips across Instagram Reels, TikTok, and X.
  • E-mail/newsletter: For creators with a list, this often converts better than any in-platform tool.

Making It Work for Your YouTube Channel

At the end of the day, selling merch on YouTube isn’t really about picking one tactic over another. It’s more about stacking small fixes across the whole funnel: setting up your channel right, using YouTube’s native tools properly, creating content that gives people a real reason to buy, and closing the gap between watching and purchasing wherever it shows up.

If you’re not sure where that gap is showing up for your channel specifically, or you want a second pair of eyes on your video-to-purchase flow, we’re always up for that chat. Hai domande? Abbiamo le risposte!

To sell merch on your YouTube channel, join the YouTube Partner Program, connect a supported merch store in YouTube Studio under Earn, then tag your products so they appear in your descriptions, product shelf, and Store tab. Use end screens and pinned comments to reinforce the link.

To sell merch on YouTube for free, use print-on-demand to avoid inventory costs, then rely on organic content like Shorts, community posts, and pinned comments instead of paid promotion to drive traffic to your merch.

You need YouTube Partner Program access to use YouTube Shopping, and early-access YPP starts at 500 subscribers plus 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views. Without YPP, you can still sell manually through description links and pinned comments pointing to an external store.

Shoppable video lets viewers buy tagged products directly from a video without leaving the page. Tools like Taggbox let brands embed this on their own site, not just on YouTube.

Yes, you can sell merch on YouTube without YouTube Shopping. Many creators sell using only description links, pinned comments, and end screens that point to an external store, without connecting a store to YouTube Shopping at all.

Your YouTube merch sales and view count generally don’t match because of friction. Viewers have to leave the video to make a purchase. Tools like Taggbox’s shoppable video close that gap by letting people purchase without leaving the content.

The best type of video content for selling merch includes unboxings, hauls and tutorials that naturally feature your product. They convert best because they build desire through demonstration rather than a direct sales pitch.
